Flight Design has been the leading seller of light sport aircraft since LSA operation was approved in the United States. Overall, LSA sales have been below industry expectations, so there are surprisingly few on record in the US - fewer than 400. Today, as customers describe it, they seem loaded, expensive - but back then it was $110,000. You may not meet the $50,000 budget purchase limit. Still, you can get close - you can basically get it. Flight Design aircraft at half the price, that is $70,000 to $80,000.
According to Tucson, Arizona-based light sports expert Roger Lee, you can pay an extra $ 10,000 for a just because the maintenance records are accurate and so detailed. Lee works on LSAs in his shop, Roger LSA Service, and teaches others about the Rotax engine he uses in flight design.
Lee offers this advice. "When I do a pre-purchase inspection, I like to open the log book and look at the oil changes and the oil type. Look for leaks on the engine, whether it's fuel or oil. Another good place to look is the belly of the plane . If you have a small fuel or oil leak, it's going to be under that plane unless someone cleans it up. Look for stains." he said. "It's a trim on the tail. If somebody leaves that out, you've got this sunken dirt there and the stabilizer itself. Another place to see it is on the wing tip strobes. It was sitting outside of those that had milk, and the sun disturbed them."
Lee also finds "lead sludge" in the fuel tank of airplanes that use 100LL without changing the oil as required every 25 hours. If you find lead sludge, you know you need to clean the gearbox too. Rotax has a five-year tire replacement warranty, so be sure to check for scheduled maintenance. Lee estimates that the hourly cost of operating a CTSW or CTLS is $45, considering hangar, fuel, maintenance, scheduled maintenance, engine fund, insurance and other costs. He usually sees a true airspeed of 115 to 118 knots. One of the biggest problems experienced pilots face is slowing the plane down and trying to get too high. It must be at 60 knots to land. Try not to stop on the landing. Maintain a few more knots of airspeed and release some downforce to facilitate the aircraft's descent. The Prowash gives you better control.
