Glock 42 Vs 19 - Possibly the most anticipated firearm of Shot Show 2014, and perhaps the entire year, is the Glock 42.380 Auto. Of course, the #1 comment about the pistol is what it is not - a 9mm single-stack pistol. Glock claims that "years of aftermarket requests for a super-concealable, reliable, single-stack GLOCK .380 pistol led to extensive research and development to bring the GLOCK G42 to the customer." I wonder if most of these customer requests were really for the .380 chamber. Despite the controversy over the caliber, the pistol itself is a new generation in the Glock family tree. The frame has been slowed down, simplified, and tweaked in small ways, the G42 Glock's answer to the pocket pistol market, which has seen growth in the last 5-6 years as other manufacturers have released slimmers. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a G42 from a friend at a local gun shop, High Mountain Hunting Supply. The Lender came with limited ammo and was literally sold out of 380 autos in the city, except for the expensive self-defense flavors. While my time at the range was somewhat short due to ammo availability, I was able to really embrace the size and shape of the gun. Not only did I find the frame to be pleasantly slimmer than all the other holsters I've owned, but the shape of the back and front strap is more comfortable. The G42's trigger does not have ridges on the trigger like other guns, and the blade is also narrower. That's where the positives stopped for me, as I found everything about the G42.

The trigger was a beast, felt close to 8-10 lbs from 5.5 lbs. He was stubborn, requiring a lot of pressure to get a break. I can't say if this can be said for every G42 or just this one, but it was very unpleasant and difficult to place an accurate shot. Recoil felt like it should with 90gr round nose bullets. I had some feeding issues, but with limited ammo for the repeat session I was unable to diagnose if it was a magazine issue, an ammo issue, or a gun issue. Reading other reviews on the internet, it seems that feeding problems are not uncommon. Most armchair Glock experts will quickly fire "You're just slowing down" or "The thumb is dragging the slide, interfering with recoil." I'm guessing it's the dual recoil springs (sound familiar, Gen 4 owners?) or ammo, or a combination of the two.

I brought the G26 Gen3 to compare Glock's previous flagship sub-compact. The 42 is slimmer in the width department at 24mm / 0.94 inches, but it's still slightly larger than a Keltec P3AT or Ruger LCP. The grip on the 42 is about the same length as the grip on the 26, which still leaves the little finger hanging in the wind for other mid-sized shooters. The barrel is 3.25 inches and has a capacity of only 6 rounds with the standard factory magazine, which is quite common for pocket pistols in its class. The concave thumb recesses of the frame have been redesigned as a simple little overhang and I noticed that as well. The smaller frame made sense and still felt like I could buy a good one every time.
With the trigger and power issues with the G42, I was still able to shoot better with the G26. But this can be attributed to the time spent behind the shutter.
Overall, I think the Glock 42 is a good concept that has been tested and advanced to solve some of the problems that many others claim. Perhaps the pressure was greater from the sales/marketing departments for the 2014 SHOT Show release, due to the questionable "perfection" of this model. Regardless, the G42 will fit into a niche that seems to grow every year as CCW permit holders grow and the market moves more comfortably toward a single stack-centric model. The buzz has brought the decline of .380 auto as the rare .22lr in my area at this point, I still personally want to hold out for a stack of 9mm. However, so far, the G42 is hard to pass up and I would encourage everyone to try it on for size. Just look for its flaws, lower your initial performance expectations, and maybe, just maybe, the one you take home will work as it should.

Right on: Why Glock 42? As for performance - quite impressive. It's not *completely* broken in yet, as we only put 200 rounds through it for our first test. I used 100 rounds of Aguila 95gr. FMJ as opener and 100 rounds of cheap Monarch 94gr from Academy. FMJ to see how low we could go with ammo quality (while still staying at the factory loading). At 200-round breaking, I had an FTF of about 40 rounds in the down and dirty Monarch stuff, which was weaker than the Aguila. For a short .380, this group holds up very well, on par with other compact Glocks. One small issue, the 6 round mags - getting the last round is a bit difficult because the .380s are short to the point where the load is loaded, the bottom round tends to go forward instead of down, and it takes a while. A little effort for the last. Because of the difference in magazines here, the standard Glock Quickloader (or SLINO if that's your opinion) doesn't work, and they don't have one for the 42 yet. But this is more of a practice/training issue. anything
Glock 42 Review
Mechanically, it's just the standard Glock, but scaled down. There's not much to say - the layout is identical to any other Glock Gen4. A note on that – while the 42 uses Gen4 features, technically (at least according to the one Glock representative I spoke with) it is the first gen, as this is a new gun. The rest of it is ... built with Gen4 features, I'll still refer to it as Gen4.
